Tradition-rich history
Vineyard Habsburg
Heritage in every bottle
The House of Habsburg was one of the most influential and respected royal houses in Europe. The throne of the Holy Roman Empire was continuously occupied by the Habsburgs from 1438 until its dissolution in 1806. Austria is the land of music, art, culture, history and fine cuisine. It is the beating heart of Europe, which is proud of its imperial history and scenic splendor. And so the Habsburg winery is part of this rich cultural and culinary history of Austria. Which is being successfully led into the future by the direct descendant, wine producer and entrepreneur Maximilian Habsburg-Lothringen.

With originally 0.5 hectares of cultivation area in the wine-growing area of Wagram / Großriedenthal in Austria, the well-tended, family-owned vineyards produced a little more wine than the family could once use. And so a small group of lovers of exquisite rarities always had the opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of the private Habsburg winery. During his training at Klessheim Castle in Salzburg, Maximilian learned oenology, the art of viticulture. The Habsburg family soon recognized the potential that professional viticulture can offer. The success proves the wine producers right. And so, with a passion for wine tradition and entrepreneurial skill, the Habsburg winery was already producing around 20,000 bottles of wine on 4 hectares of cultivation area in 2020.
Aiming for the best quality
Aiming for the best quality
In order to guarantee the special quality of our wines, the grapes are carefully selected. Around two thirds are thinned out so that only the best grapes grow to full maturity. This remaining third of grapes of perfect quality is carefully picked by hand and vinified with a lot of experience and the most demanding cellar technology. The Habsburg-Lothringen family is always personally involved in the very sensitive and demanding assemblage of cuvées. Each bottle of this cultivated oenological treasure, produced with love and care, guarantees the highest level of exclusivity. The sustainable use of resources and the preservation of the cultural landscape of the Weinrieden are very important.

Wagram is an elongated mountain range up to 40 meters high in Lower Austria. It accompanies the Danube on both sides and on its north side represents a steep, widely visible terrain made of glacier loess. Located in the Wagram wine region, the vineyards are carefully monitored and looked after all year round. The potential of the locations, extensive vineyard maintenance, regulated yields and selective hand-picking are the prerequisites for healthy grapes and exceptional wines. Characterized by the soil and climate, the grapes are only harvested by hand as late as possible in autumn when they are fully physiological. After the gentle processing, the Grüner Veltliner matures in a modern stainless steel tank. The red wines – Zweigelt, Merlot and Syrah – unfold their individuality, terroir aromas and vintage typicality in traditional barriques. In order to give the noble cuvée the full range of aromas from the noble oak barrels, new French barriques are used year after year.
Best climate for our wine
Best climate for our wine
Austria’s special geographical location is the largest and most important factor for the exceptional quality of our wines. Although Austria is on the same latitude as Burgundy, it is much more centrally located within Europe. It is therefore in the transition zone between the mild and humid Atlantic and the continental Pannonian climate with much greater temperature variation. Warm, sunny summer and autumn days with northern, cool nights are the key to fresh, aromatic wines with a good body and fine character. There is simply no other place in the world where high quality and refreshing wines are displayed in such a concentrated manner as in Austria.

Maximilian Habsburg learned the art of viticulture during his training at Klessheim Castle in Salzburg. He immersed himself in the mysteries of oenology. This gave rise to the desire to provide your own table with a wine of exquisite quality from our own production: “A wine that tastes great and certainly does not cause a headache.”
